ICMC has been in partnership with the Global Shepherds Berhad shelter for survivors of gender-based violence in Kuala Lumpur since 2011. The shelter was founded by the Good Shepherd Sisters over 40 years ago and today provides protection to refugee survivors of gender-based violence whose life is most at risk. It takes in women and children and can welcome 20 people at a time.
A Conference was organised by the International Catholic Migration Commission (ICMC), in collaboration with the Migrant and Refugees Section of the Holy See, Caritas Asia, The German Commission for Justice and Peace and Future of Work, Labour After Laudato Si on the theme “Future of Work” in Bangkok from 2-4 December, 2019.
The Conference brought together more than 70 participants from different church based groups and NGOs from Asia and Oceania. Also present were key representatives from IOM, ILO, UNHCR, OHCHR and UNESCO who spoke on their areas of specialisation.
The Conference focussed on three thematic areas – (i) Child Migrants and Refugees, (ii) Human Trafficking and (iii) IDPs and the implementation of the Global Compacts.
Ms Theresa Symons, the Regional Manager of the Good Shepherd Asia Pacific Mission Development Office, shared on Good Shepherd’s commitment to address the issue of human trafficking in Asia Pacific in the areas of Protection, Prevention, Prosecution and Partnership. See photo above.
The Conference was a great opportunity to network and establish links with other Catholic organisations working on the same issues as Good Shepherd in the region.
